In a bid to find a new football club to play for I spent Saturday evening searching the Football Mitoo web site for clubs in the London area. I didn’t aim very high, I actually looked for clubs who were at the bottom of the table and had been letting in a lot of goals because I figured that they would need a defender or two.
I think I went a bit mad because I sent off a load of emails and landed myself three trials. One for Monday, one for Tuesday and one for Wednesday. On Wednesday the club I’m currently with hold their weekly training session and I intend to go to the trial and then go to their training session.
Today is Monday and I was invited to attend training with a club called Clissold Park Rangers.
They are a team that I have played against before when I was playing for AFC Ealing, they hammered our 9-man team 14-1 in a cup game. When AFC Ealing folded I contacted CPR to enquire if they were looking for any players, they laughed at me and said ‘thanks, but no thanks”.
Fast forward about five years and they now have two teams, a first team and a reserve team, and their reserve team is leaking goals at an alarming rate. I was told that training would be at Latimar Road and would cost £5.
They train on six-a-side pitches. I say train when in fact I mean a load of them turn up and have a six-a-side game of football. I haven’t played this in about two or three years and it showed as I huffed and puffed around the pitch.
I obviously did enough to show some kind of potential (or maybe they were just desperate) because on Saturday I will turn out for their reserve side for the first time against Primrose Hill Reserves.
I’m really chuffed that I managed it; hopefully playing regular 6-a-side every Monday will also help with my fitness. I was also impressed with the fact that there is room to make the step up to the first team if you play well enough.
1-0 to Deano. 🙂
