Reminiscing About My Radio Station Days

For some time now I have been playing with the idea of resuming my internet radio career. Some years ago I was the proud owner of the world’s number one 100% unsigned internet radio station.

I say “100% unsigned” because at the time a lot of the radio stations proclaiming to champion unsigned music were actually playing far more signed artists in a bid to get listeners tuning in, I was one of only a handful of stations that didn’t play ANY signed music.

It was very much a one man operation: I was the station manager, I created the playlists, I planned the schedules, I created a lot of the shows, I built and ran the web site, I even did the jingles myself when the station first started running.

At first I had to do a lot of work to get artists and bands to send me their music, but once I became established I didn’t have to do this any more as they were soon falling over themselves to send me their CDs, many of them were even offering me free tickets to their gigs and the chance to interview them afterwards.

For the majority of the time I actually enjoyed working on the station, it stopped being fun by the end because I had risen to the top very fast and had put a lot of noses out of joint (people who had been working at their stations for years were bitter at not getting 5%-10% of the amount of listeners I was getting).

I don’t know who it was (although I have my suspicions), but someone connected with one of these stations started a campaign against me by hacking my web site and the server the streams were on. It got to the point where I was spending more time fixing and restoring the servers than airing the station.

That’s when I decided to call it a day.

But a few months ago I was going through some boxes in my room when I stumbled upon a couple that were full of CDs from the radio station days. I started playing some and was soon reminiscing those days and all the fab bands I got to hear. Soon there was a little whisper in my ear encouraging me to get back into it.

I won’t have enough time to devote to another radio station, but I have been thinking about maybe starting a podcast to play music from artists in the East London area, in fact the more I think about it the more it interests me.

I’d have to invest in some decent equipment as things have moved on a lot since 2004, I wouldn’t get away with a run of the mill microphone now, I’d need something akin to a Neumann tlm 103 condenser microphone, but a lot cheaper because I wouldn’t be able to afford a £900 microphone.

Will it happen? I don’t know, but one thing for sure is that I’ll enjoy listening to some quality music along the way.
